As of the census of 2010, there were 1,284 people, 503 households, and 354 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,188.9 inhabitants per square mile (459.0 /km2). There were 534 housing units at an average density of 494.4 per square mile (190.9 /km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.4% White, 0.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 0.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.0% of the population.
There were 503 households of which 39.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 29.6% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.10.
The median age in the city was 35.9 years. 28.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 29.4% were from 25 to 44; 25.9% were from 45 to 64; and 10% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.0% male and 51.0% female.

Roland is in the Roland-Story Community School District, which includes Roland and Story City. The middle school (grades 5-8) is in Roland; and the elementary (grades K-4) and high schools are in Story City.
Roland does not have its own police department. Policing is provided through an annual, renewable contract with the Story County Sheriff’s Office.
